Position Overview

Spark is currently recruiting for a salaried, permanent Building Operator (5^th Class Power Engineer).

The Building Operator reports directly to the Supervisor, Facility Operations. The Building Operator will assist in facility maintenance operations including general repairs and preventative maintenance for the facility, outside grounds maintenance and related projects support.

The building is a LEED Gold certified building equipped with:

·        Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS) capable of operating on 100% outdoor air

·        Heat recovery heat wheels and heat pipes

·        Chilled water & heated overhead radiant panels

·        Dry cooler and mechanical screw chiller

·        High efficiency condensing boilers

·        Rainwater capture for flushing toilets & urinals

·        Over 1.3 MWh solar generation system

·        New Building Automation System (BAS)

Shift schedule: Will be Wed to Sun. 8am-4pm (Flexibility in shifts is required to cover for after hours events)

Key Responsibilities

•        Operate and maintain all building systems and equipment, including but not limited to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems

•        Perform general repairs and preventative maintenance with minimal supervision

•        Assist with checking and maintaining chilled water and boiler water systems

•        Minor electrical, plumbing, and painting & wall repairs

•        Maintain outside grounds, including but not limited to lawn care, trees and shrubs. Also provide snow and ice removal as required

•        Assist with minor construction projects

•        Assist in Supervising contractors and service personnel

•        Maintaining the building in “showroom” condition at all times

•        Other duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications & Knowledge

•          Certification in 5th Class Power Engineering or in the process of obtaining 5^th Class Power Engineering within the next 12 months

•          A minimum of 3 years of experience in building operations

•          Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills

•          Previous experience with Building Automation Systems is considered an asset

•          Intermediate level of Computer skills (Microsoft office, Email, etc.)

•          Ability to shift work focus due to operational needs

•          Strong skills with hand tools and power tools

•          Strong Electrical, Drywall, Construction, Plumbing and Painting skills

•          Woodworking skills

•          Basic Landscaping and snow removal skills  

•          Strong work ethic and positive attitude

•          Desire to work in a high-performing team with a continuous upgrading culture to achieve high impact results. Fluidity and a desire to work hard and grow are essential.

•          A high degree of creativity with attention to detail

•          Ability to maintain a clean work area and organize tools           

•          Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Position Overview 

Spark is currently recruiting for a full-time Systems Analyst on an 12-month maternity leave contract basis. Reporting directly to IT Manager, this role will be making important contributions to building the interfaces and integrating applications used by multiple departments to create a world class visitor experience. In addition, they will support both daily operations and decision-making at Spark, with a focus on expanding, maintaining, and troubleshooting critical business systems, as well as expanding reporting and dashboards derived from those systems. Projects will involve working independently or collaboratively, and range in scope from preparing single new items for sale, to complete overhaul or replacement of a critical business system.  This role is based in Calgary, Alberta and candidates need to be based in Calgary to be considered for the role.

Key Responsibilities 

• Act as an agent of change to identify organizational improvements for business growth 
• Extract and analyze information from a variety of data sources - summarize and report findings to meet the specific needs of the management team. 
• Analyse, design and implement new analytics and dashboarding systems at Spark to meet the needs of the growth agenda and support and enable increased levels of business activity. 
• Liaise with end users, vendors and programmers in order to design the new information system, integrating systems across the organization, including ticketing, programs, rentals, retail and other areas.   
• Map and document processes, relying on information collected from a variety of sources (e.g. databases, management team and business unit partners), recommend process and operational improvements and efficiencies. 
• Train and motivate employees to use new systems. 
• Develop and maintain ongoing process and training documentation. 
• Create, maintain, and update ad-hoc and self-serve reports and dashboards to meet the needs of different Spark teams. 
• Maintain and reconcile business systems on an ongoing basis and expand as needed. 

• Work with internal and external support if/when issues must be escalated. 
• Due to the nature of a science centre, occasional evening, weekend, or on-call responsibilities may be required. 
• Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications and Knowledge 

• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, SSRS, Power BI, Excel. 
• A minimum of five years of experience or expertise in a developer or analyst role especially focused on systems or data. 
• Previous experience with Galaxy, Counterpoint, EventPro, or Shopify would be an asset.

The Science Educator reports to the Senior Manager, Education and is supervised by Supervisor, Field Trips. As the face of Spark’s customer service and science communication front lines, Science Educators are pivotal to the success of our purpose – to lift people up with the power of curiosity. Key Responsibilities

·                Deliver exceptional educational experiences (onsite, online, and at schools programming) connected to Alberta curriculum, with a focus on the sciences

·                Ensure all elements of the guest journey (teacher, student, and chaperone) is held to the highest standards of customer service.

·                Execute the planning and logistics of school programs, including school greetings, program set-up/take down, supply management.

·                Support brainstorming, development, iteration, and piloting of ground-breaking science education experiences.

·                Support larger Education efforts as needed, including camps, adult learning, outreach, interpretive science, and Indigenous sciences.

·                Take an ongoing learning approach to maintaining program quality – by learning new teaching techniques and practices, soft skill development, and engaging in training experience offered internally.

·                Maintain a safe teaching and learning environment for staff and our guests by following relevant Health and Safety policies.

·                Work collaboratively with other Spark teams to meet objectives, creatively solve issues, and anticipate challenges.

Qualifications & Knowledge

·                A passion for creating an amazing guest experience, regularly going above and beyond to create memorable, exciting experiences for guests.

·                High familiarity and proficiency with Alberta K-12 curriculum

·                Fluency in Microsoft programming and able to use most related platforms.

 Position Overview

The Chef-Food Services reports directly to Manager, Food and Beverage. Chef-Food Services is responsible for plan and direct of food production in Food Services operation, training of staff, inventory and cost control, and scheduling, working directly with Food and Beverage Manager while achieving the required outcomes with time spans of up to 1 year.

 Key Responsibilities

·         Maintain a strong team of employees focused on a high level of professional service and guest satisfaction.

·         Work closely and collaboratively with Food and Beverage Manager to meet objectives, anticipate challenges, and ensure health and safety standards are adhered to. 

·         Day to day management of the kitchen operation for Eatery and catering events. Includes providing direction and leadership.

·         Collecting feedback from staff, guests and suppliers, providing input regarding ongoing plans, directions, sales goals, targets and strategies for food services. 

·         Ensure the delivery of optimal results against appropriate financial and associated performance metrics. Understand food costs and effective inventory control ensuring high quality and value of food products are readily available , within budgeted guidelines

·         Maintain targeted food costs and labor cost, ensure effective utilization of staff productivity

·         Ongoing menu development, planning and costing for Eatery and catering events in relation to industry trends and guest feedback.

·         Ensure personal and team activities are aligned with business and strategic goals of Spark as a whole.

·         Model high performance, flexibility and kindness in a rapidly changing growth environment.

Qualifications & Knowledge

·         A minimum of 5 years’ experience in culinary, food and beverage, or related professional operation with high volume food production and banquet background

·          A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a supervisory position.

·         An active listener who is also a confident, articulate, concise, factual and intuitive communicator able to communicate at multiple levels as needed, both internally and externally.
